Aspect Ratios and Cropping Explained

An aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between an image width and height. Common ratios: 1:1 is a square (Instagram posts), 16:9 is widescreen (YouTube, most monitors), 4:3 is traditional screen format (older photos), 3:2 is the ratio of most DSLR cameras, 9:16 is vertical video (Instagram Reels, TikTok). Cropping to a specific ratio is essential when the platform enforces one. Instagram profile pictures must be 1:1. YouTube thumbnails must be 16:9. The rule of thirds suggests placing the main subject one-third from an edge rather than dead center. When cropping portraits, keep eyes on the upper third line. When cropping landscapes, place the horizon on either the upper or lower third line for visual balance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Select the 1:1 Square aspect ratio preset and drag the crop box over the area you want. The tool constrains the selection to a perfect square. This is ideal for profile photos and Instagram posts.
For Instagram posts use 1:1 (square, 1080x1080px). For Instagram Stories use 9:16 (vertical, 1080x1920px). For landscape posts use 1.91:1 (1080x566px). Use the Instagram and Story presets in the crop tool to get the exact ratio instantly.
Enter the exact pixel values in the X, Y, Width, and Height fields below the crop workspace, then click Apply. You can also drag the crop box handles to fine-tune the position.
Cropping cuts out pixels without re-encoding the remaining area at a lower quality. Our cropper saves the result at 92% quality which is visually lossless. The resulting image retains the same pixel density as the original in the cropped region.
Most platforms use a 1:1 square aspect ratio for profile photos. LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook all display profile pictures as circles or squares. Crop to 1:1 and make sure the subject is centered for the best result.
